World-Class Sailors Turn to C-Tech.
New Zealanders David Clark and Brett Morris—both now based in Sydney—have recently upgraded to C-Tech’s Medium OK Dinghy mast and are already reporting major gains in performance with only limited time on the water.
A legacy of excellence
Dave, who placed 5th at the last World Championships sailing with his old mast, says he feels noticeably faster and more confident with the new C-Tech mast. Brett Morris, training partner and fellow Kiwi, has also seen great results with the same rig.
Dave began his sailing career in the P-Class, competing alongside many of his peers in regional and national competitions. In 1980, he claimed 2nd place in the Tanner Cup for Auckland East, while our very own Tim Willetts placed 3rd for Auckland West. Brett, who was coached by Tim for Wellington in both the Tanner and Tauranga Cups, also secured 2nd place. It has been inspiring to see both Dave and Brett evolve from promising young sailors into top-tier OK Dinghy competitors.
Why C-Tech?
C-Tech masts are custom-built in high-modulus carbon fibre, cured in an autoclave, and engineered for specific sailor weights and styles—a formula that consistently delivers results at the front of the OK fleet. David notes:
“The rig feels very responsive to moding upwind with both a fast forward and high mode when required.”
The standard Medium OK mast is designed to suit sailors in the 90–93 kg range, offering a balanced blend of strength and responsiveness. Each mast is fully rigged and tested before leaving the workshop, complete with gooseneck, halyard fittings, and carefully measured centre of gravity. David also adds:
“Being softer between the bands upwind, the mast requires more luff round in the sail, which translates to power downwind when the mast straightens.”
Since switching to the new C-Tech mast, both Dave and Brett have reported consistent improvements in speed and control across a variety of conditions. Their confidence with the rig is growing as they prepare for the upcoming season, fine-tuning their setups with the latest C-Tech equipment.
The OK Dinghy class has a long-standing connection with New Zealand, where innovation and development—particularly around masts—has always been a focus. C-Tech’s involvement in the class goes back many years, and we’re proud to continue supporting world-class athletes like Dave and Brett.
What’s next?
Both Dave and Brett are set to receive the latest V3 OK battens, which they’ll pair with their current V1s to fine-tune setups ahead of the upcoming season.
“Dealing directly with Tim has been an absolute pleasure. He is super responsive and tuned in to the first-class quality required to compete at a high level in the OK Class.” — David Clark
Maybe not the best moment for Brett's sailing, but at least the mast bend looks good...!!!
